GS1 Databar Barcodes
GS1 DataBar barcodes are often used to label fresh foods. These barcodes can hold various information, for example an item's batch or lot number, serial number, or expiry date, in addition to other attributes used at the point-of-sale, such as the item weight.
Note: Before you open the GS1 Databar Barcode Setup page for the first time, you must run the Insert Default Data action. This action is accessible from the Retail Setup page, under LS Retail - BackOffice - Administration - Tasks - Basic Setup.
-
On the Retail Setup page, click Insert Default Data.
-
On the Selection FastTab, select the GS1 Databar Barcodes option, and click the Insert action.
To set up the support for GS1 Databar Barcodes
-
Go to LS Retail - Backoffice - Product Design - Barcodes, and click GS1 Databar Barcode Setup.
-
On the GS1 DataBar Setup page you can now see a description of the various segments of the GS1 DataBar that are supported by the new functionality. The segments in the GS1 DataBar Barcode start with an Identifier and are followed by a value which usually is of a fixed length.
The following table describes the available Section Mapping values:
Value | Description |
---|---|
GTIN (EAN) | All GS1 DataBar barcodes have the GTIN (EAN) segment which starts with 01 and is followed by a 14 digit EAN barcode. The EAN barcode has leading zeros. Example: In the CRONUS LS Demo company, item 20030 Apple, Golden Delicious, has this Barcode No.: 1332225560441. |
Lot No. | The GS1 DataBar barcode can contain a segment with a Lot No., also called a batch no. The Lot No. segment has an identifier of 10 and it is followed by up to 20 characters. The Lot No. segment has variable length, so it should always be the last segment in a GS1 DataBar barcode. If the item described in the GTIN (EAN) paragraph above has a segment with a Lot No., the GS1 DataBar barcode could look like this: 010133222556044110182-83-55 or (01)01332225560441(10)182-83-55. |
Exp. Date and Best Bef. Date | The GS1 DataBar barcode can have a segment with information on the Expiration Date or Best Before Date. The segment identifier for the Exp. Date is 15, the length of the date field is 6 digits, and the date must be formatted so the first two digits represent the year, the next two digits represent the month, and the last two digits represent the day: YYMMDD. If the item described in the GTIN (EAN) paragraph above has a segment with an Expiration Date, the DataBar barcode could look like this: 010133222556044115170930 or (01)01332225560441(15)170930. If the GS1 DataBar barcode has a segment with identifier 17 or Best Before Date, then that segment is treated exactly in the same way as the Expiry Date segment. LS Retail does not have a specific field in the Trans. Sales Entry table for the Best Before date, so the Best Before Date in the GS1 DataBar barcode is stored in the Expiration Date field in the Trans. Sales Entry table. |
Serial No. | The GS1 DataBar barcode can have a segment with the item's serial no. The identifier for the Serial No. segment is 21 and the length of the serial no. must not be greater than 20 characters. Example: In the CRONUS LS Demo company, item 60130 ACE Washing Machine has an Item Tracking code for Serial No. and this 13-digit EAN barcode: 4664525868598. Also in the Demo company, a few of these items are available in Store S0001, so if you want to use a GS1 DataBar barcode to sell one of these items, the GS1 DataBar barcode could be like this: 010466452586859821ABC123456B or (01)04664525868598(21)ABC123456B. When this GS1 DataBar barcode is scanned on the POS, the system will insert the Serial No. automatically and the POS operator will not be prompted for the serial no. Labels with GS1 DataBar barcodes containing Serial No. can be printed from the Retail Item List page, see image below. Note: This report will only print labels with barcodes from the Item Ledger Entry table and only available serial numbers will be printed. |
Weight (kg) and Weight (g) | The GS1 DataBar barcode can have a segment with the item's weight, either in kilograms or grams. The identifier for Weight (kg) is 3100 and the identifier for Weight (g) is 3103. Note that the length of these identifiers is 4 digits. The Section Size for both the Weight (kg) and the Weight (g) sections is 6 digits. The GTIN (EAN) paragraph mentioned item 20030 Apple, Golden Delicious. That item has EAN barcode 1332225560441. If your vendor provides you with these apples in 5 kg bags, you could create a GS1 DataBar barcode with weight in kilograms for the bags. For the same bags you can also have GS1 DataBar barcodes with the weight in grams. These barcodes will look like this: 01013322255604413103005000 or (01)01332225560441(3103)005000. |
Weight (lbs) and Weight (lbs 3 decimals) | The GS1 DataBar barcode can have a segment with the item's weight in whole pounds (lbs) or in pounds (lbs) with 3 decimals. The identifier for Weight (lbs) is 3200 and the identifier for Weight (lbs 3 decimals) is 3203. The GTIN (EAN) paragraph mentioned item 20030 Apple, Golden Delicious. That item has EAN barcode 1332225560441. If your vendor provides you with these apples in 8 pound (lbs) bags, you could create a GS1 DataBar barcode with weight in pounds (lbs) for the bags. For the same bags you can also have GS1 DataBar barcodes with the weight in Lbs 3 decimals. These barcodes will look like this: 01013322255604413203008000 or (01)01332225560441(3203)008000. |
